Thomas Merton was a man with no intentions in this world. Born on January 31, 1915 in Prades, France, Thomas Merton
became an orphan at age 16. After spending some time going to Cambridge after high school, he moved to America to with
his grandparents. At this time he was more interested in drinking and parties than studying. Here in America he
enrolled into Columbia University. This is where he was greatly inspired by the religion Christianity.
